Though St. Stephen’s day is a public holiday in many European countries, the passage of the Law of Separation of Church and State in 1905 means that today, St. Stephen’s Day is worked, with Alsace and Moselle departments considering it a bank holiday.
St. Stephen’s Day (Fête de Saint-Etienne or La Sainte-Etienne) is France’s “boxing day,” taking place on December 26, the day after Christmas. The day honors Saint Stephen (or Etienne in French), the first Christian martyr who was executed for recognizing Jesus as the Messiah.
