Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970 in the US. It started as a collaborative bipartisan effort driven by Senator Gaylord Nelson with the support of Rep Pete McCloskey and activist Denis Hayes.
The first Earth Day brought together groups across the nation around the shared concern over the deterioration of the environment along with the impacts on human health. It resulted in the development of the US Environmental Protection Agency and laws that protected the environment and people.
In 1990, Earth Day evolved into a global event with nations around the world participating in actions to help protect the environment and support communities.
