All Saint’s Day, or La Toussaint, is a national holiday in France that takes place on November 1st. In France, All Saint’s Day is a Catholic holiday that commemorates and honors the dead. In the past, All Saint’s Day focused on commemorating public figures, whereas All Souls’ Day—which took place on November 2—honored deceased relatives and close friends. However, because All Saint’s Day is a national holiday—and All Souls’ Day is not—today, observants typically honor and remember both groups of people on La Toussaint.

Because banks, businesses, and public services are closed on All Saint’s Day in France, many use it as an opportunity to visit, clean and maintain, and leave candles and chrysanthemums (la chrysanthème) on the graves of deceased loved ones—a tradition that initially began after World War I, when the French president asked people to leave the flowers in cemeteries in honor of the soldiers that had been lost.
